Despite years of wrangling for direct shipments, wine aficionados don't expect the law that took effect Friday to have much effect on their drinking habits.

While happy that the General Assembly voted last spring to allow the direct shipment of wine to Maryland residents, many say the law doesn't go far enough. It allows the selling of wine by mail only by wineries in the United States - not by retailers or foreign wineries.
