Tennis: S. Park Ace Picks Va. Tech

Summary

Severna Park's Patrick Daciek, the best tennis recruit the county has seen in years, will play at Virginia Tech this fall. Patrick almost opted for the University of Maryland, but Coach Jim Thompson of Virginia Tech won him over. At Virginia Tech, Daciek will join a team hoping to be ranked in the top 30 next year. He's part of one of the school's best recruiting classes in years, joining twin brothers Jonathan and Zachary Pine of Vienna, Va., who are both ranked in the top 10 in the Mid-Atlantic Section.

This spring, Daciek (ranked No. 57 nationally in the Boys 18 division and among the top 500 in the world) passed up high school tennis so he could play in several national tournaments. Last month, he placed second in men's singles at the USTA/MAS Championships in Reston, Va. Daciek fell to top-seeded Matthew Scott in a tough three- set match.
