Summary


Coaches will tell anyone who will listen that success in the regular season is usually determined by how hard a team or individual works in the offseason. No one understands that better than the county's softball coaches, who for nearly a quarter century have benefitted from the offseason work of pitching gurus Jack Crandell and Joe Cunningham.

That run, however, may be coming to an end. The county Department of Recreation and Parks has asked Crandell, Cunningham and their fellow coaches to undergo background checks that require them to submit their social security numbers. The veteran coaches have thus far refused to do so - citing identity theft as their primary concern - and therefore are not allowed to use county facilities.
