Summary


Fibrocystic breasts are characterized by lumpiness and usually pain or discomfort in one or both breasts and is the most common cause of lumpy breasts. Symptoms include swollen, tender breasts, and one or more lumps.

Commonly symptoms worsen just before a woman's menstrual cycle and subside by the end. Changes occur in the glandular and connective tissue caused by the hormonal changes of estrogen and progesterone during the menstrual cycle. These changes can create an increase in firmness of the tissue and cysts may emerge.
