It was fitting that the South River defense made the crucial play of the game. Not only did it force four turnovers, but it forced North County quarterback Josh McQuade to throw an incompletion on a game-tying two-point conversion try with 29 seconds left in the game, preserving an 20-18 win over a gritty Knights squad.

"Defensively, we are just a bunch of tough Edgewater kids that aren't gonna take no for an answer," said South River head coach Steve Erxleben, who was the team's defensive coordinator last season. "On that last play, we were just trying to drop coverage underneath and go man-to-man over the top. Honestly, we thought they were gonna run the ball. We were just able to make a play,"
