West County: Meade Middle Student Wins Carson Scholarship

Summary

Meade Middle School eighth-grader Christian Unkenholz, 13, was awarded the Ben Carson Scholarship in recognition of his academic and community achievements during a celebratory dinner April 27.

Although the qualifications for the award are rigorous, Christian appeared to have little trouble meeting them. A straight-A student throughout his middle school years, he surpassed the required 3.75 grade point average. There was also an essay requirement based on someone who had inspired the applicants. Christian chose his older brother, 17-year-old Tim, and wrote about looking beyond outward appearances to recognize his brother's character and inner strengths.
