Q. With no pattern that I can discern, our basement bathroom has a sewer-like smell. The odor occurs occasionally and lasts approximately 24 hours. When the odor is present, the "smell" is quite potent and unpleasant. We called a plumber. However, when the plumber came, the odor had disappeared.
He guessed that there was an accumulation of gases in the sink. The plumber suggested that we could use dye in the toilet to pinpoint potential blockage. This procedure is expensive. The bathroom was remodeled two years ago. The bathroom is seldom used. We use the bathroom and bedroom for guests. We have guests coming in May.
