Girl Eludes Would-Be Abductor

Summary


Two days after Marley Middle School Principal Susan Cassidy talked to students about what to do if someone tried to kidnap them, an 11-year-old girl followed those instructions when a Glen Burnie man allegedly tried to abduct her Thursday afternoon.

According to county police, the Marley Middle School student was walking along Wendover Road about 3:15 p.m. when she passed a van occupied by 68-year-old Richard Daniel Bassett. Mr. Bassett, of 7509 Pillsbury Place in Glen Burnie, allegedly grabbed the girl's arm, but she pulled away and ran.

Reached by phone yesterday, the girl said she remembered Ms. Cassidy telling students Tuesday to run to the nearest adult and scream if someone attempted to kidnap them.

"When he grabbed me, I tried to think about what (Ms. Cassidy) said, and I tried to get away," she said.
