Gas Prices Fall, Food Levels Off

WASHINGTON, D.C. - Food prices steadied over the early summer, leveling off after a 5 percent just over the previous 12 months, according to the latest Consumer Price Index for the Washington- Baltimore area.

Sheila Watkins, regional commissioner for the bureau of Labor Statistics, said in a prepared statement that an 8 percet decline in the price of gasoline from May to July offset a slight increase in almost all other goods monitored for the index.
