The Comptroller of the Treasury, currently held by William Donald Schaefer, is one of four statewide elected officials along with the governor, lieutenant governor and attorney general. His chief duty is to run the state agency that collects taxes, but the comptroller also is a key figure in managing state pension funds and is a member of the powerful Board of Public Works, which has the final say on awarding hundreds of millions of dollars in state contracts every year.
