A local improvement association is strategizing to combat what members said is an increased level of crime in their community.

Several of the 15 people who attended the Brooklyn Heights Improvement Association Monday night said they have been victims of assaults or threats in the past few months. Many pointed to the demise of the HotSpot program - eliminated through state cuts to tackle a massive deficit - as a reason criminals have re-entered the community.
